Bloomington Celebrates National Poetry Month

Did you know that National Poetry Month began in the United States in 1996? It was started by the Academy of American Poets, who designated April as a month-long celebration of poetry. The goal of this event is to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry in the United States, and to support poets and poetry organizations (Poets.org).

Since then, the event has grown to become a literary celebration around the world, with schools, libraries, and communities across the country hosting events and programs to celebrate poetry and its important role in American culture.

Poetry celebration in Bloomington, IN

Poetry is not just words on paper - it's an experience. It's the creation and sharing of something beautiful, something that connects us to each other and to the world around us. It's the act of reciting a poem out loud, feeling the words roll off your tongue and fill the space around you. It's the joy of hearing someone else's words and feeling like they're speaking directly to you. And it's the pleasure of enjoying all of this in a cozy, welcoming space, surrounded by others who share your love of poetry.

Bloomington's National Poetry Month events were a perfect example of this - they brought together poets and poetry lovers from all walks of life to share in the beauty and power of words. From the Poetry Marathon presented by the Writers Guild @ Bloomington to "A Night of Poetry & Music" featuring Tony Brewer, Matt Hart, Hiromi Yoshida & Rose Zinnia, there was something for everyone.
